i hardly ever buy meat but we popped into morrisons tonight to get some free range meat for fajitas etc. stacks of meat for sale but there was no free range pork, chicken or turkey, i was really disappointed actually. they did have "improved welfare" hens who had "natural light"!! - but obviously still barn raised.
the only free-range meat we could see was "spoilt pig" bacon at £16kg, but that was all. such a shame, all the union jack flags were out, clever wording etc but not a free range bird in sight...grrr

so we ended up with prawns - which i read a few weeks ago, were very likely to be processed by slaves somewhere ...cant win.

but my son did get some "fairtrade icecream" so thats ok then

I can only agree  can't find free range meat at our local Coop either (so I don't buy any) .

I buy Free Range chickens but can't get them at our local Tesco so have to travel to our nearest Tesco Extra. I always buy plenty and freeze them though so I don't have to do the journey too often.

Why support the supermarkets? Buy from your local producers, butchers, farm shops etc and you can ask them where their meat is produced.

totally back Hughesy ..... lots of us on here are producing and selling meat which is welfare friendly and free range .... back smallholders.

this is one topic that seems to be getting through to more of the public…maybe time to start upping your own advertising,,,

the one thing we have said we will do, is….let the buying public look at how the chooks and animals live,,then they will know they are free range

Totally agree about supporting local producers etc. But also, sometimes the supermarket is just far more convenient. When you have to herd three kids round the shops (for example) the supermarket is the way to go for lots of people. It's disappointing that your struggling to find one that has a choice of free range meat, especially after the recent shift in public opinion.

We get most of our meat from a farm shop, but when we have to go to a supermarket we have found Waitrose to be by far the best, with lots of free range chicken and pork, including bacon and sausages, and even their standard meat is much higher welfare than it needs to be.

Budgens are quite good for free range meat, our local store sells meat sourced within a 1 mile radius if you have one near you?

Unfortunately, for a big town, Telford doesn't have many butchers. The one nearest us has no parking nearby so I need to use my scooter to get there and the pavements are narrow. I should make the effort though. I said I would after the horse meat thing. I do buy most of my fruit and veg locally. Just wish there was still a local butcher.

Unfortunately buying from a local shop doesn't always mean getting local produce. A lot of butchers are realising that people want provenance when they buy meat though and are stocking more local meat. The "buy local" movement is growing which is a great thing for those of us that produce and sell food. It's one  way we can beat the supermarkets, along with offering a far superior product of course.
