Hello from Essex

Hi guys, I've stumbled onto this page whilst researching smallholdings. I have come into possesion of 6 nice acres of great land in styria in Austria (with prebuilt if slightly undercared for farm house and seperate large Barn (even more undercared for  :P)

The holding belonged to my wifes grandparents and has made its way to us. It is currently being rented by a local corn growing farmer. I'm still figuring  out the best use for the land.

Only trouble is I've spent my whole career working in offices and am only just learning the first places to start, well I love the website and will be sure to stick around for updates.

Hi, and welcome.

I had a holiday in Austria years ago - it was very lovely. What a wonderful inheritance! I'm sure you'll find lots of useful advice here.

Get out of the office, onto the land and get poor but happy :)

Hi guys, thanks for the warm welcome. I'm really excited about 'getting poor' lol I'm very keen to move and to 'live the good life'

This smallholding has been in my wifes family for 3 generations and to me it seems to be a tragedy to see it rented out to a stranger. We're both still quite young (I'm 26 and she is... hmm probably shouldn't reveal a ladys age, but she's younger than me) Her name is Tanja (pronounced Tanya) and I am having trouble persuading her that this would be a great lifestyle choice as she has memories of her grandparents and parents having to work full time jobs as well as tending to animals etc, she's also worried about never having holidays again.

She also has an aunt who raises pigs and chickens locally and another aunt who owns a vineyard, I really doubt I could find anyone anywhere in the world who would turn down an opportunity like this to become self sufficient, enviromentally friendly and to live a wonderful natural life... except for my missus!!!

Hi Chris! Buy Tanja the fanciest pair of wellies known to man, and hook up a weekend somewhere where you could be part of a smallholding and see what she thinks. I said goodbye to the nice warm office, the nice clean suits, manicures every week to the poor dirty life of pigs that is just heaven.  Be welcome to try us out or I am sure there are others who would welcome you from this happy little forum of potty people who love this life or dream of this life as well.

Looking forward to hearing how you get on.
