Re-using compost
« on: June 12, 2014, 08:54:54 pm »
Hi,
I'm busy planting up my tubs and baskets, last year I didn't use any fresh compost and just planted into the previous years compost and added some granular fertiliser, things grew well and flowered well, but I think I may be pushing my luck to try that again this year, so all the baskets have fresh compost and I've taken the top 6 - 8 ins out of the tubs and topped them up with fresh compost.
I now have two bags of used compost and was wondering if I left it in the bags until next year and then just before I plant add some sort of fertiliser, I would like to use something natural such as seaweed or blood fish and bonemeal, do you think it would be OK to do this, it gets very expensive buying new compost every year.
Regard,
Sue

put it through a compost heap with new vegi material etc, or use it to dress flower beds, the problem with continuous reuse is bugs and diseases build up in the compost!!!

Hi Bloomer,
Thanks for the reply, I rather thought that might be the case.
