Hi everyone. I'm new to the forums and smallholding, having just bought a place in Devon, just outside Okehampton. Aiming to run this more as a lifestyle business with my wife and brother-in-law. We have had a fair bit of capital expenditure (it was expected!) but the killer has been the VAT. We will be selling excess produce (when we get some!) at the farm gate, which will be zero rated for VAT, so is it a good idea to register for VAT to get back all the VAT we've paid out so far?

It would be best to ask an accountant but from my experience yes you would, without a doubt!
Best thing i have done financially as a smallholder/crofter.

Just a quick update, yes had a change online saying return approved, in bank within 3 days.
So a fortnight in total to get my vat back - happy days !
(Mind you ! All going back into farm ! - days of clothes shopping changed to pig shopping these days !  ;)
