Hey everyone - my friend has found a tick on her hen and is wondering if there is anything that you can use on them to prevent this - bit like frontline/spot on for cats and dogs....

I would think that a regular dusting with Diatomaceaous (sp!) Earth would work to some extent?

Permethrin spray. You can buy it from agricultural suppliers as blow fly/maggot killer.

You can Frontline them - I've done it to broodies - but you have to lay off their eggs for a  while (can't remember how long).

we use frontline- ever since a vet suggested it (quickly followed by her telling us she couldn't possibly recommend it of course as it wasn't licensed for poultry) many years ago.  we use it very rarely and only  for tick or lice problems. one squirt under each wing and one round the back end. we were advised about egg withdrawal for a month but as we hate waste we eat them with no side effects- honest  :excited: we just don't sell them to anyone else for that time.

Awe Brilliant guys - thanks so much for all the advice I'll pass it on to her. Mine have never had ticks but I know the place she lives is rife with tick this year... :chook: :D

I must confess I did not know that hens could get ticks. It might be to do with the weather. I would say maybe giving their house a good disinfecting and then try and find out where the ticks have come from and maybe treat the pasture which they are on also.
Hope this helps
