Eggs from the farm gate
« on: May 07, 2014, 01:01:16 pm »
I have just read a post that says you can't sell fertile eggs from the gate. Is this true'? If so, where can I find the official version please? Thanks.

I read that you weren't allowed to in one of the smallholding magazines ... it was a while ago now. As for anything official .... I haven't tried to find anything.  ;D

Lots of people around me sell eggs at the gate .... all have cockerels.  ;D Me too.

Me too. Although I think Hector (aged 7 3/4) is probably there for show now and Hoppy - well, the hens can outrun him  ;D

We looked into it and were told it was fine as long as there is no visible sign of fertility. Which there would be I guess although it would take an expert eye to spot it. All ours are probably fertile to be honest.

How is anyone going to check for visible signs of fertility? Break them all?

I sold a box of eggs to a colleague at work who unbeknown to me put them in an incubator he'd borrowed. He hatched out six chicks, five of them girls - not bad for £1.50 eh?  ;D .

Thanks everybody. You have captured more or less what I thought. Very reassuring to have your comments.
