One of my ewes came in after lambing on Wednesday with what looked like a cyst on the back of her head, had a look at it last night when I was feeding and it had burst with thick pus coming out , squeezed as much out as I could and then sprayed with blue spray. Is there anything else that I should do. She is the mum of triplets, I have put them out for the first time today as they were pretty small but she is not joining the others and keeping them lying at the gate back through to the stables. She is eating ok but doesn't seem as happy and relaxed as the others. I know that sounds a bit silly but she is just not herself, could it just be because I kept her in for so long?

If it was pus then that's an abcess (walled off infection), not a cyst. You could give PenStrep if you wanted to be on the safe side I guess.

Now the abcess has burst out she should be fine and perk up, just keep an eye on her.

If it's burst on the outside Anne it should be ok if you've squeezed most of the puss out.  They can burst internally and the puss goes into the system in which case she may get an infection / fever.   I'd watch what you give her if she's feeding the lambs.  Maybe if she's handle-able give it a good rub with surgical spirit or the like, they can fill up again if there's a wee hole, and then another spray.


Must have been a thorn from a hawthorn branch or something?  or has she been in a tussle with her pals? a peck from a crow?  you giving her a dunt on the head with a sharp instrument?

I did wonder and googled it and yes it seems that they do

Perhaps she had a thorn or summat? Hope she feels better soon, yeah we d jab her too xx
