itching
« on: April 04, 2014, 07:04:41 pm »
we were busy last week so kept the dogs in the stable (straw) for the day but now the gsd is itching her belly badly, and making herself bleed. I have sprayed her with frontline but no relief yet and im thinking it may be mites rather than fleas?

all the other dogs are fine.
I have also total mite spray (hens) and eprinex (cattle mite) pour-on  and also deosect  available but I don't know if they are safe for dogs.
whats the best thing to use to stop her itching? shes never had this problem in 11 yrs.

Sudocreme or calamine lotion.  I wouldn't use hen or cow stuff on mine.
Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age

Mites or lice.

Frontline should kill the crawlies.

I think dogs can have some antihistamines, to help with the itching, but I'd check with the vet which ones are safe.

Piriton 4mg 1 tablet 3x daily will be fine for GSD as long as not on other meds.

May just be allergy to something in the straw. Try bathing her to remove any dust or spores just use a mild puppy shampoo. If you use frontline use it 48 hours before or after bathing.
If the skin doesn't start settling within a few days she may need vet check for meds.

Hope she feels better soon  :dog:
