New arrival
« on: April 04, 2014, 09:34:28 am »
This is officially a very late night.. but in a good cause!  Rowena foaled when my back was turned, just after 1am, I was back by 125 and the foal was already standing, drinking at 253 and hale and hearty this morning.

It's Rowena's 10th foal, and 5 years since her last one but we know each other so well it all went pretty clockwork, on the first night of having her in and seriously foalwatching as opposed to popping out randomly whenever I woke up, just in case but not really..  ;)

And she's a lovely wee mouse dun filly, doesn't get much better than that.  Pics on the website at http://kirkcarrion.webs.com/foals.htm

So, early night tonight then, and a few weeks til the second foal is due in late May, but I'm really looking forward to seeing the two of them play - they are half sisters by my stallion and their dams are mother and daughter so they're doubly related, if I could order a matched pair of fillies I might have to give up the sensible "they must be sold" mantra and think about driving pairs..  :innocent:

Pretty wet and cold for me, but luckily the rain was vertical and gentle at the actual foaling point so the barn roof and stacked bales kept the bedding and newborn dry that critical first few hours.  I threw out an extra layer of dry straw at 3am and it's still ok, just praying we don't get that baltic east wind again driving the rain in the open end, there's just a couple bales making a shelter that end, should have put up 2 layers.. but at least I got Rodie in at teatime and did the mare swaps I was dreading doing on my own - better a bulging mare than trying to bring in a soaked shivery foal in the dark :)

I keep saying the "she's for sale" mantra but I'm not doing too well on the sensible side this morning, I put it down to sleep deprivation and postnatal hormones radiating from Rodie - trip to the GP and then to the hospital today so that'll calm me I'm sure ::)

She is absolutely gorgeous - congratulations to you all!   Have to say I wouldn't want to sell her either - what a little smasher she is!  Mum is  too - very pretty.

Are you looking for "R" names?  How about Reka meaning Sweet or Rayliza meaning Pretty?

Thanks and yes she'll be an R name but all Gaelic here for the purebreds (Renaissance aka Ace was a PB Trakehner) so we had Ribhinn (princess), Rabhan (musical repetition or rhapsody - she was the spit of Ribh and full sis), then Reabhair (reiver, bit of a thug), Raoid (sheaf of corn, bright yellow dun), Riabhag (skylark - vocal mouse dun filly), Ruire (knight, he was black and I fancied him for jousting on!), Run Alainn (lovely secret - bay and arrived unexpectedly early), Raineach (fern - he was by Rannoch of Achnacarry so it was the sound as much as anything) then several years off and now R.. ???
