Sea shells

iv been driving past a certain field and wondering what the white blobs were in the set a side field for a while. I took the dog up there today for a walk and noticed they are putting clam (/?) shells on all the land in that area by the lorry load.
beautiful huge undamaged shells at that.
I presume this is for calcium - or lime??   :thinking:

Are they scallop or cockle shells maybe? Great for composting but I would have thought they would need to be broken down before spreading  ???
keeper of goats, sheep, pigs, ducks, chickens, turkeys, dogs, cats, goldfish and children, just don't ask me which is the most work!

Same happens round here. I think they are ploughed into the ground.
