I considered Shetland but was told it was full of very rich people so I felt we would be out of place just a wee bit 

When we first moved to NE Scotland I was a sales rep covering the entire area from south of Stonehaven to the Black isle. I discovered that wherever I went the locals were firmly of the opinion that theirs was the only decent place to live and that the neighbouring towns were full of unfriendly sorts with schools full of drug sellers ...... unless they had been born in one of the other towns of course
The truth turned out to be that they were all reasonably nice places with the usual mix of good and bad sorts, the good outweighing the bad by far of course. I can count the people on one hand who were truly horrible, if only they knew what a select club they belonged to
I guess it's human nature to be a bit competitive but don't let hearsay put you off, go for a holiday and check it out in case you are missing a wonderful thing.

A bus driver I spoke to who had moved up from Liverpool said there were so many jobs it was incredible. 


They have just brought a cruise ship up from London and moored it in Lewick harbour for the guys they are having to import from the south to build the new gas plant


One of the farmers said they lamb in April, and someone was planting some more potatoes outside yesterday as they liked the earlies.  I asked about frosts and he just looked surprised.

I think of Shetland as home. My mother moved there to work for 6 months and stayed 27 years. We try and have a visit every year which is not always possible now with running this place. I would love to live there, if it were not for the cost for my family to visit. its an expensive place to get too. Has to be one of the most beautiful places on this earth.

Think you've just sold that to everyone on TAS.  I think living in these places would be wonderful, but you are restricted and have to have the finances to get off the island now and again.


Mind you, at the prices of property, I don't think that would be a problem for most of us.


Enjoy your stay there DBE, you sound like you're having a lovely time.  I would stay until the end of May though, to get the better weather.

If we ever moved again - not very likely - it would be further north to Shetland or Orkney. Wild horses wouldn't drag me back to the city.

Saw my first new lamb of the year yesterday    Real little cutie


I would deffo buy here if I wasnt determined to travel.  Its a wonderful place.  I stayed last night at St Ninians Isle and tonight am parked up behind Sumburh Hotel.  £5 with water and electric     And the Jarlshof next door.
