Hello! I have had Lola my dachshund for abou three months now. She's a lovely little thing full if beans and love! She is very clever and easy! I have heard horror stories about slipped disks and bad backs so was wondering if any of you have experience with dachshunds mini or otherwise... She is very agile and loves to clamber all over the place! How does one stop this short of a lifetime on a lead which I am not prepared to do! She seems sturdy and happy, perhaps they re scare stories and nothing more?? Any advice is most welcome... Her breeder kept her dogs housebound with only access to the loo in a closed garden... Lola comes around the farm with me and sometimes rides on the back of a horse with me too! Her life is much more active!

I have had mini smooths for 17 years at the moment we have a silver Dapple and a Black/tan . yes they can have back problems but I have never had one with a problem.
Don't let her put too much weight on as this can increase the chances.
We had one that we used to do mini agility with and she could go over the jumps as quick as any of the other mini breeds.

I would think she will have really good muscle tone and that should help support her back. I don't believe in breeding dogs that have health problems as you'll probably have guessed by now

They are prone to spinal problems, most commonly, a slipped disc

(ouch). As said, a very slim dog with plenty of muscle tone has much lower chance of developing such problems and much more fun staying fit

It's true I work in a vets where we do quite a bit of spinal work & Daschunds are renound for it - I've not seen 1 yet but it's a known fact in the breed in both miniatures & standards & a friend had 1 that had those problems. The only things I can recommend are finding good breeders & asking if any of their dogs have had problems, research the breed before buying & see if it's right for you. Also when buying a puppy I always get a written agreement that if after a full vet check if I find I have been mislead & have a sick puppy I have the right to a full refund or to exchange the puppy - never had to return a dog but any good breeder should agree to some form of contract. The only other things you can do is make sure she doesn't jump up or do silly movements & get rough housed too much when playing as things like that can cause damage - it's just a case of being careful.

Very sadly Lola passed away

I went away for a weekend and left her with my mother. She escaped and was run over. I am still beyond sad which is why it's taken a while for me to update this post.

Thanks so much guys! Such a lovely bunch of people on this forum. I do miss her little wriggly presence hugely, we'd already had such great adventures. I wish I'd never left her forte weekend, I'm sure she was looking for me a she never ran off in her life before. Thank for the kind words, means a lot
