Wanted: Woodchip
« on: March 09, 2014, 06:54:25 pm »
The tree surgeon I usually get my woodchip from for my chicken pen is  no longer on the go and I am having trouble finding another in Fife so I am hoping someone on here can recommend someone please :)

I know it's a bit far to be of much use to you but Rosehill Timber near us in Edzell cuts their own timber for outside use (unseasoned) from whole logs and sells sawdust and wood chips by the sack or ton. You might find a similar mill nearer to you.

Not sure where in Fife you are but around here I can think of two small places that you might try, one on Falkland Estate just along from Pillars of Hercules, does woodturning and furniture but there's a forestry operation on the estate too so either might.  Or at Den of Lindores by Newburgh there's a specialist wood mill run by Dennis Anderson.

Volume might not be enough, but failing that just buy a bag of shavings from any agrimerchant that supplies stables, that's what I use and a bag of compressed dust-extracted shavings a. lasts a long time and b. is less dusty for the chooks than commercial sawdust.  I get mine at Collessie Feeds, Newton of Collessie..

Probably worth keeping an eye out for the council men too.  WIth all the trees that came down this winter thier chippers will be busy.  I've never known them to say no if you ask nicely and turn up with a bag.
