Exporting to Ireland (southern) - anyone done it?
« on: March 04, 2014, 11:56:41 pm »
Hi all

Anyone exported to Southern Ireland? I've spoken to the export team at Carlisle but there's a few things I still don't get that they were unclear about. The guy buying the pigs is collecting so will do all the journey stuff but he says I need to quarantine the pigs for 30 days away from other animals. All ok with that BUT I can't work out where the proof of this quarantine is documented? I believe a vet needs to confirm it but on what? I know the vet needs to do a health certificate but is this something they do 30 days prior to collect and then again with 24 of them being collected? Also they may or may not need blood tests, anyone know? Customer (and maybe Carlisle) implied that it it depends on what the vets form says but surely it's the same for all? And  not sure we'll get blood from a protective sow or her weaners if she's in there!

It's probably me who has missed something but  currently confused. Can anyone help?

Thanks
Steph

Hi we sent 2 over to Ireland a couple of years ago and our vet had to sort all the licences/passports and they also did blood tests then all we had to go was sign everything the vets had sorted.
Hope this helps a little and good luck xx

Contact the BPA, one thing they actually do well is to help with export. They'll be able to put you in touch with the right people.

If you contact DAF they'll give you the checklist https://www.agriculture.gov.ie/animalhealthwelfare/
The vet inspects and okay's your quarantine area (this can't be done retrospectively, so get them out asap)
They'll need blood tests to be sure they're clear for travel and the vet will need to check them 24 hours before they leave.
Your buyer will need to apply for a specific import licence and you need to also apply for licences.
It cost around £200 for me to get the inspections and paperwork required to move three little pigs  ::)
Good luck with it

Now I'm sooooo confused. Vet came last week to do bloods but it was a b¥¥¥¥y nightmare. Vet struggled to get any blood out of veins and we had a v irrate sow when she heard her piglets squealing (and an irrate mangalitza is not fun!).  Called animal health at Carlisle who put me through to one of their vets who said I'd obviously not read the info emailed to me as I'd have known no bloods are required for Southern Ireland (northern is different). Am confused if everyone else did have to have bloods taken :-(
