Injecting
« on: February 24, 2014, 06:50:49 am »
I have been giving one of my girls penacilin because she has a bad foot, cut it on a sharp stone she dug up.
She is wise to me doing it as she eats her dinner now in the neck, so thought l could jag her in the bottom with a 'slap shot' l am getting today. What l have read on the internet says you cant but doesnt give a reason. I can understand if shes going off for slaughter.
Is it something to do with absesses ? I read they can get them from being jagged .
Its hard to contain her in the field as its electric fence all round, and l cant get her in a trailer she wont put her foot down, understandable !  Should l invest in some pig boards ?Any thoughts greatly appreciated !

Mine get done mostly in the bum as it's the furthest from the bitey end. Never had any problems and can't say I have ever heard about not doing it there.

Kja, hadn't seen that, very interesting. You shouldn't really get abscesses if the needles etc are sterile. Anywhere has potential for infection once the skin is broken. I use a masterject for the big pigs and always go for the bum, even had the vet do the bum.

we use masterject too but still go by the no rump jabs.

our farm vet once told us if you ever gat a vet out that goes for the rump on anything bigger than a piglet show him the farm gate. its not worth the risk imho.

I must admit I pressumed the bum was the only place to use the masterject safely, will have to look into changing that. Thanks for the info Kja

At worst you'll get a small abscess that might get cut out by Meat hygiene when the pig is killed.  This abscess is al likely to occur if you jab in the neck, but the idea is that the neck meat is far less valuable.

However I do neck with a needle if they're small enough to still pick up with hernia, and slapshot in the neck if they are bigger
