Ryeland Rams, ewes and lambs for sale
« on: September 17, 2009, 01:48:31 pm »
Due to the need to down-size my hobby flock, I have a selection of Ryeland rams, ewes and lambs to sell. All are pedigree and some registered. An ideal breed to start with as they are friendly, manageable and easy breeders. Making excellent stock, pets or lawnmower and of course very tasty meat.

People might like to know where you are - approximately - for travel costs.
Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age

As my profile shows, near Wadebridge, North Cornwall, actually just a couple of miles from Port Isaac (Doc Martin country).

Pardon my ignorance, but are the lambs ready now, or later.  I haven't kept lambs, but am interested in keeping two for the freezer.  If they are ready now, I am sorry but I'm not set up for them yet but will be next year.
Thanks.

Could be eaten soon, but as pedigree etc. would be better to use as breeding stock and eat their younge.

Ros, the only way to raise just lambs ie minus ewes for the table is to get orphan lambs in spring and bottle rear them, and slaughter them in the autumn. Bottlefed lambs don't always do as well as ewe fed lambs, so they might take a bit longer to finish. Lambs are usually only weaned a matter or weeks before they are ready for slaughter, unless they are primitive breeds like Shetlands. You might be able to get store lambs of some breeds in autumn maybe from hill breeds to fatten over the winter - some farmers do this as a business, but I woudln't liek to keep Blackface lambs in a garden unless it was awfully well fenced.

I saw your other posts about similar. I'm sure others will advise too.

Why don't you have a look on the Ryeland Flock Book Society's web site, as there is some breeders listed that have stock for sale, not too sure how near to you though.
