Green Tomatoes.. waste not want not
« on: September 03, 2009, 07:06:47 pm »
Hello - Mrs Bobby here

Bobby picked all of the green tomatoes yesterday that were just not reddening - we had over 10lbs !!  So today I made Green Tomato Chutney and Green Tomato soup - this is our first year of back gardening growing - so it is all new to me and so exciting.  I also baked fresh egg custard tart from the chooks eggs and we have enjoyed our first sweetcorn.
I so wish we were wealthy enough to give up our jobs, move to the country and do it full time, like some of you people :)

We had a few full sweetcorn, but some were half full - they tasted lovely, such a lot of space taken up though.  The broccolli and cabbage were fantastic as were the spuds and garlic

At this time of year, you can place green tomatoes on paper towels
in a sunny window, and they will go red - turn them around to get both sides
It is the sun that turns them to red.

None of my tomatoes have gone green either - any chance of getting the recipe - checked on the recipe link, but not there
Thanks

These fried green tomatoes are made with eggs and cornmeal or bread crumbs.
Ingredients:

    * 4 to 6 green tomatoes, sliced 1/4-inch thick
    * salt and pepper
    * flour for dusting
    * 2 eggs, beaten
    * cornmeal or bread crumbs
    * bacon grease or vegetable oil

Preparation:
Salt and pepper the tomato slices; dust lightly with flour. Dip slices in beaten egg, letting excess drip off, then coat well with meal or crumbs. Fry in hot grease or oil until browned, turning gently (about 3 minutes each side). Keep warm in a low 200° to 250° oven if frying in batches.
