The bloke that does tree work for us from time to time gave us a load of Cypress bark chippings. They are fresh - and smell wonderful. There's quite a lot of green in them.

I was minded to put some in the gates to the poultry pens and on the wet bits round the hen houses (although it's dry now, I don't expect it to stay that way  ).

Would it be harmful to the hens? Inevitably they'll rake about in it and peck at it and I don't want them to get ill.

If it's OK, Duncan says he can get us any amount

Mine are on Leylandii chippings and used to roam under my two specimen cypress trees at the front. The chippings were down for a good 6 months before the hens went out the back, but the cypress trees were just there and I never thought to check if they were Ok - they did make huge holes in the ground under them as it was so dry so I broke my ride on mower when I went into one.
