Vet came to disbud today.
« on: January 14, 2014, 06:59:42 pm »
I still feel a bit sick. :(  Had to deal with it all myself because OH was out. Waited all morning desperately trying to keep busy, at the same time hoping he'd arrive before my 7yr old got home from school.

He came just in the nick of time. I was unsure how long it would take. 10 - 15 mins altogether, local anasthetic (which I had to hold them fo)r. Then disbudded them both( which i had to hold them for)  and ringed the little fella.  The vet was surprised at how much horn bud growth there was, so i hope they are ok. I had pushed for today, everyone else kept saying there was time enough, including the vet!

Have checked them every 30 mins, the little fella seems fine, the little girl is bleeding a little on one side. Her Mum licked off the silver spray straight after the vet sprayed it on

Should any bleeding be considered a problem, or is a little blood the norm. ?

It's not "the norm" per se, but a little blood isn't disastrous. Apply a little veterinary wound powder on it if you have any. If you don't have any, put a little cornflour on it.

The worse thing is if they itch their heads a lot. Try to keep to the normal routine tonight- if the light is usually off, leave it off etc. Hopefully with a full tum from mum they will have a good sleep.

The first time is always the worst - but honestly they shouldn't even notice it anymore today. It is definitely better for them (especially if mum and the other goats in the herd are disbudded). They may still knock each other during play and cause some bleeding in the next few days, but I have some plaster tar spray (from the horsey section) ready and that normally helps.

Thanks for your reassurance Beth and Anke.  Yes, I can report this morning they are back to their jumpy selves.
Both of our other two goats are hornless, and I figure the kids have more of a chance to be adopted by a good home if they are hornless. Bloody stressful though.
