So, on boxing day the weather was so nice & dry & sunny  I decided to planted the rest of the winter onion sets that i had been delaying because of the poor weather.  600 of them! 
In previous years the kids & family kept stealing them so this year i am determined to have enough - do you think thats enough with some to share? 

Better get some more in for the spring plant just in case.

I'm sorry Q but you can never have enough onions. Since my wife and I became converts to the recipes in The Hairy Bikers diet book, we must use at least a dozen onions a week. A way you go  I just love growing onions.

We always run out of onions, agree with Bodger, no matter how many you plant you will wish you had more 

None in here until early spring this year since the old guys at the allotment assoc. advised me. I'll hold them responsible if I don't have a good crop

on no Bodger! I may need to find some onion planting equipment. I agree that you can never have enough.

What was the reason you didnt plant winter onions Mammyshaz - I need to know I havent wasted my time.

I find the winter onions come out bigger then the early spring ones ( although this is the latest I have ever planted them.

The pigeons keep pulling up the garlic I planted - I am sure they have a snigger every time i replant them - at least I know the roots are strong!

I've planted onions and garlic every October/November for a good few years with no complaints. Decided to buy very local from the allotment association this year as their potatoes  gave a great crop and were lovely.
When I visited the little hut, the guys inside told me they don't get onions that time of year as around here they are best planted early spring and to come back then for the sets, so that's what I decided to do.

Ours all went by October but then they weren't keeping that well so I'm doubling numbers for next year but half will be spring planted. Got the same problem with garlic - thought it'd easily last us but we're nearly out now because I've used so much more thinking I had loads (and some of the last bits now are soft too).
