I used to use a lovely programme Sidekick which listed all my contacts and their details had a diary and a daily to do list which transferred forwards. 


It doesnt seem to want to work on windows 8.  I have tried the google ones but they dont do what I need and are cumbersome to use


Does anyone run a good online diary programme?

I use Thunderbird for my email and a Plugin called Lightning for calendar and to do functions .  You could just use Sunbird.   I use these as I can store the calendar online (Google calendar) and share it with the family / access it on my phone.
