the rubber burning smell was only when the ABS light came on and the brakes were juddering. it did it 3 times over the weekend when I pressed the brakes.

Could very well be that the pads are so worn - there arnt any pads and its metal to metal and is your seals are melting.

Dont mess with brakes - you need them :)
