wanted - someone to plough just over 1/4 acre - hampshire
« on: December 03, 2013, 08:23:20 am »
Is there anyone out there or does anyone know anyone in the Hamsphre/Wiltshire area that has a small plough who would be willing to plough over a smallish area of just over 1/4 acre where we had our pigs.

We have been trying to do it with tiller but its very hard slow work.  We have asked around but all the local farmers are too busy or not able/willing to do small areas (its a fenced off area within an acre plot so if for turning reasons more ground is needed this is not a problem and we are expecting this).

Many thanks for any help

Someone who competes in ploughing matches would probably bite your hand off for a bit of practice ground.

Get in contact with your local ploughing society and ask them if any of their members would be interested:

I'll second that suggestion - our ploughing is all done by a young lad getting in some practice for the competitions. As a rule, the folk in the ploughing matches tend to have smaller, vintage tractors which will fit a small paddock much more easily. Our commercial neighbours couldn't help as their equipment is all far too big.

If you've had pigs on it I would have thought it would be pretty well ploughed up already and that all you would need to do now is level it. That could be fairly easily done with a harrow, and if you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, you could maybe borrow a harrow and do it yourself.

Trouble is pigs do a good job of ploughing but then they pack it down hard again. If you want nicely turned over ground you need to have them on there for just the right amount of time.
