Replacement tag question (prob a dumb one..)
« on: December 02, 2013, 03:11:19 pm »
One of my sheep i bought from a friend has lost his tag- not the EID one thankfully. Am about to order a replacement one- Just to double check the info needs to be the same as the EID tag doesn't it? He will be going in the freezer once I can catch the damn things up...

You don't need anything other than your flock number. As the orginal tags is from someone elses you cannot put the same number back in. You just order a replacement for your own flock no and put it in and record it

Yes you can order a replacement tag with the original number on it - if you are sure that's the right number. Or you can remove the remaining tag and re-tag with a pair of your tags and make a note in your book.
Probably easier to phone up your tag company and order a replacement tag with original number - it's done for pedigree animals all the time (and even more regularly for goats)...

I had this problem and when I rang the company they told me that and wouldn't allow me to put the same number in.

Well I use Shearwells and never had a problem in ordering identical replacement tags for bought-in (pedigree) ewes and goats. As far as I know they only need to be red if you don't know the original number.

So does that mean they have printed tags for you with someone else's flock number on them?  I didn't think they could do that?

The wording/diagram in the front of the movement book is a bit ambiguous, it definitely says replacements for bought in sheep must be red, but doesn't mention whether they can be retagged with the same number they came with, but the diagram suggests they should be your own number.

Probably too close to bed timw to be thinking about this.

I absolutely never had a problem with this - my goats are masters at ripping out their tags and they are all registered, so need to keep the same number. I have done this for bought-in pedigree ewes too. When you give shearwells the number they do check though, one of mine had the wrong number on her pedigree certificate and I had a few difficult phonecalls from DEFRA... but all got resolved, as only two numbers had been switched by accident.

Yes a few of my ewes lost one of there two tags and I got same number replacements for them and several are bought in ewes that was from Ritchey. I phoned to order and that was ok with them. I had several bought in ewes who had lost both tags and had to tag.with red as I could not for sure remember which was which.

The idea of tags is to have an audit trail.  If you document your replacements, then you can put your own flock sequence in.  Red, as Anke says, comes in when you don't know what they used to be.  If you can argue a responsible case with DEFRA, if they care enough to ask, that's all that matters.

Today I ordered tags for bought in sheep ,  RAM bought in October lost his eid tag so my choices are  / replace with an identical eid tag / replace with 2 red tags with my flock number  or since I think the remaining tag will fall out soon I have opted to replace both tags with identical ones .       THREE ram lambs purchased this week to turn into teasers  they have eid slaughter tags , to keep them after 12 mths of age I have ordered  3 pairs of tags in RED to upgrade them this is my only option

I understand how it is helpful to be able to reorder, but I find it alarming that someone else can order tags with my flock number on.
