Poodle colours do they affect the dogs nature?
« on: October 04, 2013, 01:28:07 pm »
Hi
This is a bit of an odd question.  We have always had black labs and I am very aware that black labs are very different in character to chocolate and yellow labs, we are now contemplating a new puppy and I quite fancy a toy poodle, but does their colour make a difference to them.

Also do toy and miniatures have different nature's?

I would be grateful for any information thank you.

You'll probably get ten different answers from 10 different owners/breeders.  I have three Brittanys, have had 16 over the years as well as 7 litters of pups - never had two the same in nature.
Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age

With Labs, Chocolate have a reputation of being scatty etc  BUT, that's probably due to not so selective breeding, any brown with more or less any brown, so it could be the same in other breeds, the rarer the colour the less mates to choose from.......our chocolate Lab is not at all scatty, she is clever and very laid back......apart from that, they should be the same as humans...eg, just imagine a dating agency with all blonde people for instance and only one brown haired person, and you are so fussy you only want a brown haired husband...if that's the only choice then you are stuck with his genes...but then they say red hairs have a temper

Louise, I can't help with your questions but I do have a miniature poodle.

He is black and 2 years old and the most delightful little dog you could want. He has a fantastic nature and is so gentle. I am able to take anything out of his mouth, even though he might have his teeth tightly clenched on it. He will turn his head away to stop you getting it but never growls or tries to bite.

His favourite game is chase, so he will pinch anything, underwear, shoes, gloves, you name it, so that you can chase him to get it back.

I love hint on bits

Can't help about poodles but it's an interesting topic.

As HGL says I have heard things about chocolate labs being "different" but never heard anything said about yellows. Would be interested to know what is said ...... as we have a yellow pup.
Father has trained his own yellows and blacks and other peoples and never found a difference.  :-\  Apart from the fact that they are ALL different in personality/temperament anyway.

Did find something on a website that said fox reds had same working ability as blacks and yellows but tended to be clingy to their owners  :-\  .

I have heard people say similar things about collies eg. blue merles tend to be more problematic/hyper, short haired are more hyper than long haired.

Throw backs to certain traits of generations ago.

Not convinced but interesting.

Thank you all, so as long as I check out the parents, pra tests, temperament etc colour doesn't really seem to matter.

I can't see that anyone has answered your other question

Also do toy and miniatures have different natures?

I have only statistically very minimal firsthand information, and none of it recent.  However, I was always of the opinion that Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodles were, personality-wise, as good as three different breeds.

All intelligent, but Standards I have found less friendly than the others, and much more likely to be aggressive towards other dogs.

Miniatures are my favourites; much less hyper and attention-seeking than Toys.  Don't get me wrong, I have loved all the Toys I've known, but they're not the sort of dog I would choose to own.  A Miniature, however, may well find its way into my home and my heart one of these days...  :dog:

We showed poodles for many years, My arthritis stopped me clipping for the ring so we have not showed them since 1998 when we got best puppy dog in breed at crufts
We showed Minis my sister showed toys and my other sister had a standard

Toys are defiantly sharper than minis and can be more yappy. cant say about the difference in Colours as we only had Black minis, my sister had black and brown toys and it was usually the browns that where into mischief. She has a cream toy at the moment and she is so quiet and well behaved
My other sisters standard Bertie was a first son of tommygun , Bertie was a nutter  and brain dead  ::)

Hi there.
I have two mini poo's - full sisters, but a year apart. One chocolate and one black. . My two, despite having the same parentage couldn't be more different. Popsy, (black) very lady-like, hates getting dirty and loves nothing more than lap-sitting and cuddling all day. Koko (chocolate) - typical tom-boy - often found at the top of the dung heap and likes nothing more than rolling in anything disgusting available - whether that's colour related - I doubt - Would recommend health tested parents though.

Good luck with your search, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. - Tried to post piccies, but too large!!

I keep getting people stop me with their chocolate Labs and they say they are as good as gold....all depends!!! I would love to see more photos but they can be hard to shrink and putting them on Photobucket or something takes a bit more time, I waste a lot of time already I am too busy for that  :innocent:
