Collecting seeds
« on: September 10, 2013, 02:21:02 pm »
I quite like it when Autumn comes as I suddenly have to dash about with paper bags in my pocket in case I come across any seeds I think may be worth growing next year.

This year I decided that for my plant and veg growing friends, instead of sharing my surplus in brown envelopes  I would put them in some nice seed envelopes. Well instead of that I bought some really cheap brown cash envelopes and got my own stamp made. Hey presto. That sorts out a few Xmas presents!

Very smart

Which particular seeds do you collect?  I've been sprinkling flower seeds around my garden and the road verges to get some more wild flowers, but I haven't started on any veg seeds yet.  Do you collect just from your own garden or from the hedgerows?

I collect any... So whe we walk ten dog in our village we have scooped some acorns..... So,will be giving them a go. If we go for a short break during the Autumn I usually find some seeds in a park, or even just the grass verges that I haven't got in my garden that I will have a go at growing.

You probably already know, but acorns germinate better if they have been frozen first. I can't remember how long they need to be frozen for, but it seemed to work when I tried it when my girls were little. We moved away after we planted them out so I am not sure if they ever grew into trees

I planted some acorns a few years ago in pots in the garden, then they disappeared completely.  A year later when we had a giant pile of stones cleared, there they were underneath it all - growing happily  ??? :tree:   I suppose they would have died had they been there for much longer, but they all grew away fine once rescued.

may have been a squirrel hiding them there  ;)

these bags look so nice - you should sell them in the crafts section for not so crafty and gifted folk (like myself  :roflanim: ) . I do reuse paper bags from bakeries, chemists, you name it but yours are much nicer  :&>

No they were still in their pots  ;D  (unless it was one extremely strong squirrel).  The men had just dumped a whole pile of spoil on top of the pots
