I'm entering a comp at a local show & entering a few photography categories but am struggling on 1 of the last 1s a collage of 4 pictures in the kitchen / food these are 2 things I'm entering I think - will post pics later but what would you like to see on that subject as I'm just thinking cakes, soup ect.

pic 1 captioned rabbit stew - a rabbit with skin on & veg & a pot
Pic 2 - assorted veg from the garden

Ideas please xx

A freshly baked cob of wholemeal bread, broken open, against a dark background to show the steam rising.
 
A sizzling roast leg of lamb with rosemary and other herbs over the surface, mint sauce in an elegant jar with spoon, roast potatoes and fresh garden veg, steaming gravy, all ready to serve.
 
Try to make them 'active' pics so the hot produce looks hot.
 
Display photos with border or space of some kind between each pic.

The biggest things with any picture / photograph is lighting, focus, and angle... you could get 10 people to take the same shot and they would all be different... make sure you get the most important feature to stand out...

as fleecewoman has said with the freshly baked cob..... think about the background...you don't need expensive lighting, just a bit of imagination, maybe try using a candle to give you some real warm light, look through a few food mags to see how the pro's take their pictures

oh i'm such a cynic sorry.

Try using a wide aperture to throw distracting backgrounds out of focus and show you have thought about composition rather than just taking a snap. As in this one of mine of some marmalade I made.



There is nothing wrong with a jaunty angle and a tight crop to give impact as well.

Want to try something really different? Clear out the fridge other than stuff in the door and say a small cake. Set your camera on wide angle, put it on self timer with a flash, put it on the fridge shelf right at the back then get a child to pose peering into the fridge to get the cake. i.e. taken from inside the fridge. It may work, it may not but things like that are different.

As for photography buff well I did win The Renaissance Photography Prize in 2007 and self published this photo book on the Eagle Hunters of Mongolia.

Definitely homemade bread. If you can get the steam rising people would almost be able to smell the bread 
Homemade preserves would be nice too.

Yes wow on the book & damn that's another I'm going to wan't to buy & read - I just need more book cases / shelves I can try & do something like the bread but I don't know if I'm good enough to get the steam coming off it but may try & get the glow of a hot oven x

OR - you could approach the whole thing from the other side - reality:

A sink full of higgledy-piggledy dirty dishes including a roasting pan with burnt on bits
 
A milk pan boiling over, milk froth just starting to pour down the sides
 
Hens sneaking into the kitchen
 
You with your feet up having a coffee after all the hard work of cooking a big meal.

i do like the idea of the book Henchard, it looks a stunning read,
i just might do one on a wild fox i met in a quarry, I managed to get over 50 photo's when the fox came a laid in front of me



i love the idea of the milk spilling over FW...that could be a cracking pic

My Siamese used to do that if there was any custard left in the jug    - she's long dead now
