Runner beans not growing
« on: August 15, 2013, 10:25:37 am »
Hi
My runner bean plants grew well,  have produced 100's flowers which are setting beans but these are not growing ... help!

Don't wrestle with pigs, they will love it and you will just get all muddy.

All I can think of is they are very greedy so are they getting plenty  of feed and water? Other than that I don't know. Gardening is such a hit and miss affair  ::)

Water would be my guess. Not sure about anywhere else but it feels like it's barely rained since June here. Huge cracks in the ground and lots of hosepipes (although since the peas went over, I've been less assiduous in the veg garden which I think has had a knock on to my French beans which have slowed before they should have done). Looking forward to some rain this weekend!

You obviously not in Wales then!   Inches of rain here over last 10 days .... but have noted one or two beans getting longer so maybe was water initially?

Linda, don't complain about yours. At least you have lots of flowers. We only have a few  :(

I would go with water too, I never feed the runners a supplement whilst growing , just make sure when they are planted that I have dug in rotted manure deep down where the roots will go.
My 1st lot of flowers were pretty hit and miss at setting this year but a second lot (after my 1st pickings) seem to be doing so much better, not just a coincedence I think that the showery weather is back and keeping them watered.

It's not been a good year for ours either, although did have a enough for a meal yesterday and day before.  The sparrows seem to have picked all the flowers on ours and although the plants have grown really tall, there are very few beans showing.   :(

My runner beans aren't producing much of a crop this year, but they are looking really good ( tall, strong, healthy).I will be happy with anything I get off them as they had a bit of a rough & late start.
