OMG
« on: July 30, 2013, 07:32:10 pm »
I was talking to someone in the pub about the local show and saying they don't have classes that I can enter my sheep in to. Well guess what?
Yep, the schedule is out and they now have an Any Native Lowland Breed class so I could enter one of my Ryelands and as they seem to have put the class on at my request it will be difficult to get out of it.
So I have 2 ram lambs, one Ryeland and one Coloured Ryeland. The coloured has a cut that isn't healing very fast so that rules him out.
I have twin ewe lambs, one white and one coloured. There are classes for a ram lamb and one for a ewe lamb.
I really don't know where to start, other than I think that coloured Ryelands don't need any special treatment i.e. trimming.
Anyone got advice?
The show is on 15th Aug so I am panicing now

Well done for opening up a new class  you never know, your rylands might just tempt a few locals to start with rylands giving you a good Market for your next little broods  :innocent:

My understanding is that Coloured Ryelands are usually shown untrimmed.

Just make sure their feet are done - we showed our tup last year (well, my vet, who's a friend, showed him) and Ali ended up trimming Nemo's feet at the show. Well, we were busy  :huff:

Go for it - you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Ps. Do you think you can get Kunekune on the schedule for next year?  ;)

Strangely there aren't any pig classes at all. I don't think they are big round here

Oh, enter everything you can, Sally!  It was our local show yesterday, and for once it wasn't raining, and we were up to date with farm work, so we went.  Only three holdings had entered native sheep, so of course I was asking about whether the sheep had to be registered with their relevant breed society... and everyone said, "No, not at this show", and "Yes, please do enter your Castlemilks and Manxes next year", and "It's good to show off the different breeds, even if they aren't good enough specimens to win any prizes", and such like.  Oh Lor'.... ::)

Pigs at shows in a real agricultural area are a sore point, especially somewhere like here where the last FMD outbreak is still such a recent and painful memory.  But there are several of us with pigs in the area now, and they are so entertaining in the ring...

Think I'll stick with the native sheep for a while, and maybe talk about getting a 'Handspinners' fleece' class on the schedule... ;)

Sally - at our local show we have a 'fleece on the hoof' class, open to all breeds, not just the rarer ones.   Those showing BFLs are usually up for it, but I have to round up folk with other more commercial breeds.  They are often surprised at how well their sheep can do.  The idea is to encourage farmers great and small to think of their fleece as a worthwhile product not just another job to take off.

I like the idea of the fleece on the hoof. We haven't got that far at this show but a friend has managed to introduce an art yarn class for 2014 in the craft section. Now I have a whole year to plan a spectacular art yarn.

Linda, no one has updated the website so you won't find anything on line. I have a schedule though. What do you need to know?

I was interested in times and cost of show... Hope I will be able to go.  What time are you 'on' ?

Thinking of next year ... is there a class I could enter a Dexter?  (if so what time is that class this year)

Its 15th Aug and starts at 9.30. Entry £3.00. Sheep classes start at 11.30. Dog show at 1.00 (I am hoping to enter Archie)
There aren't any cattle classes. Llandeilo show which was last Sat (I didn't go) had quite a few cattle classes.
