Grass pellets for Kune Kune
« on: July 28, 2009, 09:50:02 am »
My chum has just got three Kune Kune piglets. She has been told that they will graze in the summer and need grass pellets along with weaner pellets in the winter. We are assuming that grass pellets are commercially available, probably for horses, but does anyone have any specific brand names?

Thanks

Simple Systems sell grass pellets for horses, also freeze dried grass (Just Grass).

Thinking about it....... I'm sure SS feeds come from Halleys in Perth ?? (one of the bags of Just Grass I have from SS, is Halleys branded)

Could be worth a call to them

Hi

We have Kune's and they have farmgate weaner pellets in winter, even though they could theoritically be ok in the summer they do expect a few pellets twice a day. There is still a little grazing here all year round not sure about your churm, but these pellets work fine for us.

MARZ01, how much grazing do your kunes have?
Ours have completely ploughed their land, so we have to 'hand feed' ie fetch their munchies to them. We give them weaner or potbellied pig mix (lower protein) every evening, as we shut them in for security.
And they all love willow, which we bribe the goat with at milking time!

Oddly willow is the only tree that none of our pigs will eat.  We have several in various areas and not one has been touched.

Sorry to take over the postings.........
What kind of trees do you have?  Or rather, are there any that would be bad for piggies?

We have a variety of trees, most of which piggies are bad for.  Hilary strips the bark, eats the roots, then finishes off anything useful when the tree falls down.  Young oaks are her absolute favourite, fruit trees, beech, walnut follow in quick succession.  Think yew might be dangerous, we dont have any here.

Our kune's have 3 acres to graze, they seem quite partial to our hawthorn hedge though, which is surprising as it can not be comfortable to eat. I have been encouraging it to grow for five years and at times I see one of them tearing a large branch off! They do have all the overgrown veg and chick weed from the veg garden as well as their grazing and a few nuts twice a day.
