Hi Folks,


I'm trying to get my goats tested for CAE in preparation for finding a billy (or billies) for three of them in the autumn. I've got the vets to take blood which they'll send away but apparently I need to join a 'scheme' either one run by SAC or the BGS. I'm not really planning on showing or selling via markets so does it matter which scheme I join? I would potentially intend to sell spare girl kids privately though.


Can anyone explain the whole mess to me in simple terms?

oh, I didn't have to join a scheme when I had mine done    It was recommended (by a friend who breeds) that we used the BGS free download as paperwork though, for the life of me I can't remember what the reason was but someone will come along who knows.

  off the top of my head you need to download the forms from BGS the vet comes and takes samples and sends form & blood off for testing. no need to join anything.

you just need the general CAE and not monitored for your requirements.

All you need is to get the vet to send off the samples, if you do it on BGS paperwork it may be a bit cheaper... but probably not worth for only three girls. All you need is the form from the SAC testing lab saying that all results are negative... which they will be...
 
I just do mine that way and have never had any probs with registering for shows etc...

I didn't join any scheme. When my vet came to do mine at the beginning of the year, he said that it was cheaper if I was a member of BGS but I don't think it's enough of a saving to make it worth joining when you take the membership fee into account. If you are not registering your goats and not showing, there's not a lot of point IMHO.

Download the forms from BGs website.................mark the form/tick box,  ANNUAL WHOLE HERD test.    Vet sends samples to SAC,    results back in 10 days.
You DO NOT have to join any scheme..................

I wouldn't worry too much if you don't get it on this form if its simply for stud purpose however if you plan to show you have to have the BGS form!

Thanks for advice and linky to form. The vet filled out something similar but from SAC and was going to send the bloods off with that so I think that that will be enough - at least I hope so!

No you don't. Mine are not on BGS forms and so far I have not been refused entry to any show!

I used the BGS form on vets advice, not part of a scheme, I think it's to save the vets time (and so your money?) and if you fill it in in your own time there are less likely to be errors?

being a sceptic....maybe the vet has an 'arrangement' with aforementioned societies? our vet I know from inside info, doesn't do anything that will save you money (puts a massive mark up on meds etc!)

Our vet asked me if I was part of any societies and I said I was committee member on a BGS affiliated local club. He nodded and that was that.  Maybe they do get some benefits

First time I had goats tested the vet filled a form in after looking through and shuffling my paperwork about (leaning in the back of her car), then I had a phone call from SAC, asking about what scheme I was in and various other questions. 
Last time I had BGS forms ready filled in, much quicker, vet just took sample, matching sticker on phial and form. job done. Doesn't cost anything to use the form.
If it saves vets time, surely that keeps everybody happy, they won't like paperwork any more than us?
(if the cost of visit is based on time that should save you money?)

No you don't. Mine are not on BGS forms and so far I have not been refused entry to any show!

The classification for recognised shows, is listed by the BGS as B/W. The below is in the BGS regulations


"No entries will be accepted in the B or W categories unless CAE blood test results are on BGS submission forms or Sheep and Goat health scheme forms. This is to enable quick and accurate confirmation of the goats attending a show."


It also means you are signing the declaration stating that these are all the animals in your herd. Your entries to recognised shows are supposed to be on these forms. I'm not surprised agricultural shows haven't noticed, but I surprised no one has mentioned it when it is a goatkeeper collating entries.
