Hatching chicks

After thinking about it for a while I decided it would be a good idea and wonderful experience to hatch our own eggs. We purchased 28 fertile eggs and borrowed two incubators off a friend. The first incubator only takes 6 eggs so we chose a mix of white orpingtons, blue cochins and dark brahmas. The second incubator was digital and very temperamental. I spent two days trying to keep the temperature even but it only wanted to be 49 degrees or 24,neither being any good so we sent this back. In the meantime my one and a half year old son decided to trying juggling and broke 2 of the orpington eggs.

We decided to go away for the weekend so I left the eggs in the hands of my sister in law and believed that she would sort out another incbator. When I got home she had just given up and left the unincubated eggs on the side. After two days of searching I found an incubator for sale not far away that would hold 150 eggs. So I bought this and finally got to put my last twenty eggs in to incubate, 7 days after I bought them so I guess this means a very slim chance of them hatching. I tried candling with the first six eggs and think only the orpingtons are any good.

I like to try new things out so we'll see how I get on. Not sure that my other half is happy about my venture especially when he found out how many eggs I could hatch. Desperately want a micro pig to add to my back garden farm. Next time maybe!!!!!!!
