Large donkey for sale, to make 14.2hh. Yorkshire
« on: June 10, 2013, 11:21:47 pm »
2 year old part Poitou (French) donkey for sale. Oliver's mother is 14.2hh and is a Poitou cross riding donkey, that I ride myself. Donkeys are great to ride as, unlike horses they rarely panic, and if they see something that startles them are more likely to stand and investigate it than run away.
Oliver is at present 13.3hh and will carry on growing until he is 6, so is likely to reach 14.2 +. His mother can carry my 12 stone 6' 2" son with ease,  and I would expect Oliver to be similar.
He is lovely natured, friendly, good with farrier etc. So why not ride something different?! Big donkeys like this are rarely available in this country. £700. Must go to home with other equines.

East Yorkshire, just south of Selby.
No, he's not castrated.

Unfortunately I can't get a picture on. :dunce:  I can't even change the picture of a hippo on my avatar, which one of my sons put on as a joke! :excited:

Just thought I'd add that although Oliver is not castrated at the moment, I can get him done before he's sold, if an entire donkey is likely to be a problem.
I have left him entire for the time being as I've had some interest from people wanting to breed  a large mule, as these, like large donkeys, are fairly rare in this country also.
This picture was taken at a year old. He's considerably bigger now.

Hello LANDROVERROY,

What a fantastic looking specimen of a Large Donkey and would be a shame to castrate him and hope someone out there is able to use him in a Large Donkey breeding program.

Someone who breeds charolais bulls and halters them told me last week - tying a donkey to the halter of a bucking or stubborn calf will calm it down and the donkey will take control!

They say you learn something new every day!

An interesting concept! Donkeys certainly do have a calming influence. Presumably the calf learns to walk without the donkey before you get it to the showring. :trophy:
I think, on the whole though, that Oliver would prefer to live a more donkey like existence with other equines.  :tree: :horse:
