IBC as a temporary septic tank
« on: June 12, 2013, 09:31:03 am »
We have need of a septic tank for a few months and have been wondering if an IBC would work as a temporary one.  We would bury the IBC and the one we have has a large opening on the top so we could get it pumped out when required.  Any thoughts?  Thanks

Well  it wouldn't be a temporary Septic Tank but a temporary Cess Pool/cesspit. There is a difference as I explained in another thread on Septic tanks.

An IBC only holds a thousand litres and you would fill it with normal useage in a few days. The average household uses 500 litres of water a day. Pumping out by a contractor would probably be in excess of £100 a time (if they would do it as it does not comply to any regulations). It is illegal for anyone other than a licensed contractor to dispose of the effluent.

Personally other than as in a dire emergency I don't think it's a great idea.

Be aware new regulations have just come in regarding septic tanks. You may run foul of environmental health.

Thanks for your replies.  I didn't make myself too clear - sorry - the 'temporary septic tank/cess pit' would be just for toilet waste for 2 people who are only there part-time.  All grey water is dealt with via the veg patch and polytunnel.  ;D
