Can anyone advise when would be the right time for my girls first shear. They are 13 months old and being in the chilly west of Scotland i was thinking around mid to late May? They have a good coat on them, but are starting to walk into objects as their wool is overgrown their eyes ( i don't want to stress them for a separate eye/face trim as well).

Ryelands are a very relaxed and easy going breed. Trimming the fleece around their eyes is a frequent tasks for those who get over grown. Trimming them will not cause them any harm due to stress.

We trim the wool round the eyes maybe twice a year - at lambing and at tupping if it needs it. Doesn't stress them, I don't think.

We've got the shearer booked for 25th May.
