Fox proof bin?
« on: April 10, 2013, 04:08:11 am »
The council provide us with a fox proof waste bin where the handel folds forward, locking the bin, but the foxes know how to get it open so I thought I would try something else.
I have used a metal dustbin with one of those elasticated rope things attached to the side handles and through the handle on the lid. The elastic is quite tight but still the fox is getting the lid off.

Anyone got a suggestion?

Locked shed? I'm amazed to hear that the fox is getting the lid off even with the bungee cord. That's how we secure our bins so I am concerned to hear that method isn't fox-proof.

My gran would have said    " she should have used stronger elastic "

Are you sure it's a fox , not a badger ?  they are stronger.

Not sure of the design but could you modify the council bin to be able to be able to put a padlock on? Like drill a hole in the handle orsomething just an idea?

Only got half a dozen at the moment. Should have a dozen by tomorrow if you want them.
We will be out until later in the day though as we are due to pick up out GOS weaners from Mandy.

Sat morning might be a better bet if you are free. You can have a look at the weaners at the same time.

You can get bins with clip lids, I think places like countrywide do them.

I don't know about foxes, but it took one of those bins with clips and a strong bungee to hold the clips shut to stop our naughty and greedy GSD x collie raiding our dustbin.  But that combination did work.

Or you can try what my dad did with a neighbouring marauding cat when I was a kid.  We had the old metal dustbins, and the cat could get the lid off.  We'd hear the clatter and the cat would be in the bin, raiding. ::)

Dad sat in wait, shovel at the ready.  He took the lid off to make it easier for the cat to jump into the 1/4-full bin, in which tasty fishy morsels wafted appealing scents...

The cat duly appeared and jumped in the bin.  Dad whanged the bin with the shovel with all his might.  It was Tom and Jerry Live - a star-shaped legs, tail and spiky haired creature, accompanied by a night-rending scream, appeared as if fired out of the bin, for a split second was static in spiky terror a foot above the rim, then it disappeared in an instant, never to be seen in our garden again.

For a while I thought the three of us would end ourselves laughing.  I've tears in my eyes now.   :roflanim: :roflanim:

Anyone got a suggestion?

Pop river screw/nut & bolt on four 1 " staples from a hasp and staple set  arrangenemt and run a long thin chain through them and the lid handle so it make a sort of X and use a stong loaded carabiner type link to fasten it in place .
Or do as my neighbour down the road does . They have a  4 mm guage 40 mm square weld mesh galve  wire cage that takes three dustbins set on six hollow concrete blocks . It has a framed hinge lid with a prop open stay tow front face batwing access doors , it's closed with a hasp & staple and a spring link carabiner.
I like , it for the wind does not blow it away and the bins are kept out by the road frontage
