Aghast at how much bark or indeed wood chippings cost to use as mulch I have convinced myself this will be my birthday treat to myself!

They are good. Its amazing what they chew up and spit out the other end. Ours has been a godsend. Enjoy!!!(Great fun to use too, I love having a go, it keeps me amused for hours!)

I was thinking of getting one too ,has anyone on here got one that they can recommend , I think that one in the pic above has a honda engine and know they are good. I was chatting to a dealer the other day and he said there is an american company that makes good chippers . What are the rest of you using ?

I had an electric one - can't remember what make - but it choked on more than it chewed and I spent as much, if not more, time unblocking it than I did feeding it. Soon sold that on.

I've got an electric one and it's awful but quite good for chipping apples before pressing...

Someone gave us a petrol-engined one, not sure make, which looked quite powerful, but really did not do a good job and took so long to do it. I think the smaller or even moderate sized ones really are not much use. I am thinking it might be better and cheaper to save up all your sticks in a pile and hire a big one from the plant hire place once a year. Same with hedge trimming - the good Stihl hedge trimmer on which you can angle the blade at rightangles to go along the top of a six-foot hedge while standing on the ground costs several hundred pounds but 30 odd quid for a weekend hire, and no worry of maintenance/repair etc

Having paid £8 a bag for bark chippings - which made no impact where I spread them, and having oads of bits of trees etc that could do with shredding I thought it was the most cost effective way of sorting out the branches and providing my own wood chippings. Well OK - that and you cant beat a new petrol tool to keep you entertained!
