Apple trees
« on: June 30, 2009, 06:00:33 pm »
In the orchard behind the house there are a few eating apple trees and a cooking apple one.  Quite a few apples on this year, so long as the birds and squirrels keep off.  My uncle planted these trees in the early 1960's, so they are pretty ancient.

Whilst clearing the jungle out there, I have noticed quite a few little apple trees have grown - obviously from the windfall apples that have fallen.  No idea if they are cookers or eaters.  The question is, will they bear fruit?
If there is a chance I will dig them up and plant them fururther over.  They are about 4ft tall at present.

I have noticed a large apple tree on the railway banking - probably from an apple core thrown from the train.  It has had apples on one year, which I collected.

How lovely! What is lost if you give it a go? Maybe you have a local orchard group who can help you with identification? If they are close to the trees they might be coming from the root stock, mostly crab apple.

If not it proves my point:  in my Highers Exams in Biology 20 years ago was asked How do you propagate apples? My answer: Stick a pip in the ground and wait. Didn't get a single point for it! :&>
