some don't seem keen on the haylage although they are eating it, they prefer the straw I put down! 

Interesting that you should say that. Mine too are on a kilo of nuts (the twins) and all my ewes and ewe lambs have a good munch on fresh straw. At one point (10weeks pre lambing) they were going mad and not eating hay at all but now they'll happily eat what ever I put down!

Mine are in mothering pens for a few days this year and seem to prefer nibbling the new barley straw in preference to our rather stale hay.   We are down to the last 20 bales so will have to buy in this week.  The turn out field looks like a desert but a week ago we could not even get a vehicle on their e without churning it to mud  ??? .
