Wool slip + cold weather
« on: March 28, 2013, 09:47:43 am »
A question for those of you who have experienced a ewe with wool slip ... what do you do with them if the weather is cold / wet / bad?   Keep them in, put a coat on 'em, or just give them extra feed?

I have one who (most irritatingly) has slipped her wool again this year for no reason - I am putting it down to the stress of lambing as it happened at exactly the same time last year with respect to her lambing date (and all my sheep were crovected to kill off any lice in Jan, and cydectin'd for scab at tupping). All the other sheep are fine, but this one's fleece on her back is coming off in giant chunks every day.

Last year the weather was toasty so she stayed out with the others, but this year although we don't have snow but the nights are harsh and the wind is bitingly cold.

She'll be for the chop come autumn cos I can't be doing with high maintenance girls, so I didn't really want to fork out on a coat for her.  And I don't really want to keep her in all the time as she doesn't like it very much and her two lambs are getting bored.  Currently she has the company of another ewe who has just lambed twins this week, but they will need to go out soon.

Grr, I should have culled her last year!  That will teach me for giving her a second chance!

Anyone got any good ideas?

Hmm I had a lightbulb moment .. I have a spare pig ark (not a huge one though), so will grab that and put it in the near field and turn her out tomorrow and see if she uses it.  If she does then hoorah, else she'll be back in for the night....

I'm in a similar situation. I have two ewes who have lost wool along their backs and top of their tails, comes out in handfuls, skin appears fine underneath. This happened last year too with the same ewes and even though they were treated for mites pre tupping I'm just about to give them a dose of panomec to see if it helps. Neither are itchy though. Looks so awful  ???  . Can wool slip occur even though they haven't been shorn yet? I did think about nutritional issues but they have mineral buckets out & are still having hard feed... If you find out what is is please let me know
