Yet another incubator question
« on: March 27, 2013, 09:22:57 pm »
Tomorrow is day 21, but already 1chick has hatched about 6 hrs ago
Do I keep the chick in the incubator for the meantime?
Do I feed or give it water?

Cheers mojo

No keep it in incubator for 24 hrs it will absord its yolk and requires nothing more
keep incubator shut to maintain correct humidity (opening and  shutting cause chicks problems when membranes dry up etc)

Chicks naturally hatch at different times so don't panic - some early, some very late..  Your little fluffy one will be absolutely fine.  It will be cheeping away to the other chicks inside the eggs and will often nestle to the next ones close to hatching, 'egging' (sorry) them on.  You will find that after a few have hatched and fluffed up they will become quite active in the inci and knock some of the other eggs around. Don't worry about this either.
You will find that when some eggs pip (you see the first whole) it can take absolutely ages for the chick to tap around the shell and break out, and others just do it in a matter of minutes. It is all normal.
Keep the lid on, watch your humidity levels closely.   The air needs to be wet enough to stop the close to hatching chicks sticking to the shells yet not so wet that excess liquid forms inside the shells and they end up drowning.   If you find that you have a number fluffed up for over 24hrs you can whip open the inci and get them out.  Super quick - have everything ready in your brooder..
Leave your inci running over the 21 days  - some chicks just take longer to hatch.  It is not an exact science - such is nature :)
enjoy...I love hatching. Just so exciting.
