Orphan lamb with painful poo problem.
« on: March 23, 2013, 06:33:09 pm »
Hellooo there
Rather a wierd one I am afraid and hoping someone, somewhere may have had experience/ read about this as a problem.
My 2 day old orphan lamb brays when she poops. Rather loudly and it sounds a bit painful. She has passed meconium and has had normal looking yellowy poops since. Today however, it was a little mucus-y and there was signs of mucusy blood. is she constipated from the Lamlac. I make it exactly as the bag recommends. She eats only about 80 mils at a time but eats regularly. She is tiny! Very hypothermic when I found her and nearly dead but she received 2 shots of Kick start and slowly warmed up followed by 2 feeds of Nettex First Life Colstrum as per instructions. She is one of triplets and also pigeon toed (though I am not worrying about that as I understand it often comes right and am doing some gentle lamb physio on her daily)
Other than that she seems very well...bright, strong, happy and hungry!
Any idea folks?
Thank you x x x :Lisa x x x

Try some cooled boiled water, still warm but not so much that she burns her mouth. Sometimes if you gently massage her belly it helps.  I have had a bit of trouble with the Lamlac this year but scours rather than constipated. Mixed it weaker for a few days and reduced quantity (drinking 4 full bottles a day from 3 days!) and ok now.

Live yogurt is good to re-balance the gut. Keep an eye on her and might be worth a shot of AB if she looks like deteriorating.

Yes I would definitely feed Lamlac at LESS than the recommended concentration/more diluted than it says in the tin.

Thanks guys.... i had already given her a warm water 'meal' and a tiny bit of sunflower oil to help work things through.  She doesn't seem to have any hard poo's... all normal to softish but we will see. I will defo water Lamlac down more!
