Mid March Whiteout
« on: March 18, 2013, 05:08:07 pm »
Scottish Borders, about half hour south of Edinburgh, we're having a whiteout at the moment - winds getting up, lots of snow falling and settling and loads of it to come tomorrow, schools shut tomorrow and possibly Wednesday.  Rubbish.

Oh I know  :( It is rubbish isn't it !

We seemed to miss all the white stuff earlier in winter, but it's catching up now  ::)

It's so bad here we've had to bring ALL the pigs back into the shed (and we've cut back a bit in numbers, but there are still 56  :innocent:) because the ground is soooooo wet  :gloomy: I hope the feed lorry manages to us on Wednesday, or else I'll have some very unhappy piggies  :o

BUT, on the plus side - for the last two years March has been fairly nice - we've even had some really HOT and  :sunshine: days and then a terrible summer  :raining: Maybe  :fc: this year we'll get a better summer ? Here's hoping at least  ;)

I remember it one year, probably about 15 years ago, when I lived near Earlston, our village was cut off for a couple of weeks and some others had copter drops as they were marooned in deep snow for 6 weeks!  Now I'm in the highlands, we've not had that much this last 10 years!! Crazy weather!!

Oh well, at least I have a "look-out team" at home... my first nanny is due tomorrow and the girls can be dispatched to check on her every hour... (and the vets have 4x4s...). So far snow not lying where we are though.

4 inches at home but nothing here in Glasgow - thought we would have a struggle to get to work. Cleared snow from polytunnel this morning in case of collapse. First of my farmer neighbours sheep lambed yesterday - at least the first that i had seen - I found mum and 2 sprightly lambs sheltering by our wall as dark fell last night, seemed fine - farmer was charging round the field on the quad this morning presumably checking for lambs. Hope weather improves within next 3 weeks for mine.  :o

Lots over night and coming down heavy now with an overloaded sky.  Shetland ponies look like they couldn't care less but the goats are peed off and damp so a nice hot breakfast and new bedding and coats should take care of them.

Good luck Anke on your goaties, hope you don't have to get up in the middle of the night in this weather  :fc:

Just seen the weather in Scotland. You lot are certainly having a difficult and long winter. Hope that it ends soon and that all the tests and difficulties you have had will be over when spring arrives. Best wishes and keep warm.

It is utter rubbish here!!  Poor horse not liking it!!  Pigs dying to get out and play in the snow for a while!!  We have managed to let them out for few hours before getting them back to their pens!!  Chickens are having none of it, they are happy to staying their house but the ducks are eager to get out and play and turn the snow to mud!!  Oh the joys lets hope its not here for long!!

I guess that when the weather and things are against us it is hard to think of the good days. It sounds like the wet summer and early but long winter has been a real challenge for some of us. This time next week or the week after the winter will be a distant memory. I hoper that we will soon be basking in the sun and enjoying every morning feed and evening rounds with our animals, birds and veg.
"it's a beautiful life" - but we just are in need of a little sun to remind us of how lucky we are.

You are right MAK, we had a good week a couple of weeks back, very sunny and warm, we all thought that was it, the worst over and it did feel like the winter and last summer was a distant memory.  Now unfortunately we're back to nightmare again, it's just that it's going to take a very long good spell to dry out everyone's land, everywhere is saturated to a deep level and it just keeps coming.  :-\

The birds are singing though and everyone has started laying etc so let's be positive everyone, if it's going to get better it will start doing it soon.  ;)
