Fence prices
« on: March 17, 2013, 04:21:47 pm »
Hi,
I've read a few times that fences are expensive to maintain/build.  Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much fencing is by the yard or however it is measured?  Also how long does it last, one place we are looking at has a lot of stock fencing that was replaced about 10 years ago and is said to be in a good state of repair.

Sorry to be vague but I have little idea about this,

Thanks,
Mickey

depends on terrain you're looking at £2-3 per metre plus strainers/turners and gates if you do it yourself

fitted is about £7 a metre plus gates etc assuming its enough work to make it worth a contractors time.

small jobs cost more per metre large jobs cost less...

Thanks tizaala and bloomer,
Much appreciate those responses, gives me a good idea of what I am looking at.  How long should decent fencing last, would 10 years still be okay?

the wire should be fine the posts would need to be checked but it might be a repair rather than replace job

you can't tell without going and rattling some posts!!!

The most important ones are the corner strainers. If they are fine and the wires are still in place, it is possible to replace the intervening posts fairly easily. If they aren't, then it's a start again job. Posts dont last long since they restricted the worst chemicals - somewhere between 5 and 10 years isn't unusual. Old ones can last 30 years....

Most of the fencing on our place was done with split oak in the forties by German POWs and some of it is still servicable. The problem we have is the fallout from the ICI plant tends to rot barbed wire in no time but the post and rail has stood for seventy years
