Went to feed the 2 sows that are going off for the chop in a few days, and only one came rushing over from the field shelter. Looking over to the entrance, i could see the big fat sow lying in the doorway! Oh crap, i thought, shes dead, or ill. Imagine my suprise, when i heard some squealing and saw a couple of tiny piglets wriggling in the old straw! Nightmare! Freezing cold wind, snow, subzero temps, no fresh straw, no proper arc or sty, no idea that she was in pig, and just no idea! Quick phone call, and a local chap came scooting over with fresh straw, and showed me how to get them penned in, dry and out of draughts, and what the mum needs. Despite the freezing temps, snow and shackled together shelter, i have 6 good piglets of various colours, and a happy sow this morning. She is very attentive, nice and docile, and moves the straw about for her little uns. Panic over!
