Meg, our Collie, takes great delight in rubbing herself in otter poo, the smell is very invasive what can I do about it. I wash her with mild soap and brush out what I can but she still stinks. I read somewhere that dogs do this to disguise thier smell so they can creep up on animals unsuspected, well my sheep think they are being barked at by an otter, I don't think so.

  People advise tomato sauce on the stinky bit, I prefer it on Bacon butties, good luck, dogs seek out stinky stuff!!

Yes I know I'll probably get stick for this but I wash my dog with Lynx  when he rolls in Fox poo the stinkier the soap the less stinky the dog, the soap his no ill effect on his skin and I did check with the vet first any of the dog shampoos just didn't stop the stink

Ours rolled in the carcuss of a dead chicken that the fox had cached and Murphy dug up. Really grim stink! will remember that lynx tip. I tried all sorts but the smell just kept coming through!

Get used to it, don't stroke her when she's stinking, keep her outside until she's more fragrant?

Morris one of my bc's rolls in any dead worm that he finds, it's just odd, they don't really smell f anything but he's obsessed with rolling in them

Just from a behavioural point...she'll keep doing it unless you tell her not too.  You've got to be sharp and you've got to catch her in the act, but a very firm no (perhaps with a deterrent) can stop her doing it altogether.  Gotta be on your toes tho'!

Thinking out loud here - when I got covered in manky-silage-stink, I used an oil/sugar scrub - the oil dissolves the stinky compounds better than soap and water.


So, I think you should oil up the collie THEN shampoo off.

Thanks I'll try the ketchup would also prefer it on my bacon butties. Unless i keep her on the lead not easy to know untill she's rolling in delight. We've got a patch of SSSI land which is very over grown and the she otter has her holt there. I have only seen her once in the daytime, sliding into the river with a watervole in her mouth  can't trust these protected species. It is also protected for its red ants and greenwoodpeckers and three types of orchid, not allowed to let the sheep graze it. Told we could have a couple of cattle or horses on it during summer!
Today she found the placenta from the latest lamb birth, very excited. Aren't dogs lovely. OH says to put her in the shed when she stinks but poor girl has always slept in the house.

To make you feel better.... We have a lab bitch that loves to stick her head down the loo for a bit of poo. have to keep reminding my little boy to flush fast!
We had another lab, a beautiful but extremely greedy chap called Tom.  When I was potty training my boy he would sit and wait.  For a long time I though he was just being nice and keeping my boy company but we found out he was eating my boy's poo.   We found out only because we caught my son, who was about 2 at the time summoning the dog. 'Tom, eat!'

Snoodles, typical Lab,  , I remember our dog loved the cat litter, I suppose it was a bit crunchy too, funny that after I put my bit on here my Yellow Lab rolled in something but its not too horrid. Human poo eating smells horrid, not at all nice but I suppose to a dog it is wonderful

Yeah, even my flattie that turns his nose up at most titbits delights in what he finds in the cat litter tray.

Same here for the cat litter, we chuck the cat outside otherwise the dog would eat the poo! Shame she doesnt eat her own, save me picking it up, she s**ts like a horse!
