Pneumonia
« on: February 02, 2013, 10:42:55 am »
Just had the vet out as I noticed this morning that one of the kids breathing was rather laboured, vet was here within 30minutes and says she has pneumonia. He has given her Betamox and left me some to give in another 48 hours. Is there anything else that I can do, she is quite cosy under her heat lamp and is feeding ok?

I think that's it, keep her warm and quiet and let the antibiotics do their work  :goat:

Good on you for calling out the vet quickly, because you did the chances are she'll make a full recovery

Little kid is just the same this morning but noticed her sister was breathing rather fast, have taken her temperature and it is 39.7 so not really up much will keep a close watch during the day as I can give her a shot of antibiotic if I think she needs it. I have raised the heat lamp a little as I wondered if perhaps it was too warm. I have also left the top door open as I wondered if perhaps they were not getting enough ventilation. Please if I am doing it all wrong will someone tell me ?

Don't know Anne   what a shame, probably a lot to do with the weather but ventilation is good.  Such a worry, you're doing all you can  :fc:      :fc:

Ventilation is good, draft not good. So upper stable door should be ok to be left open. I have so far not used a heat lamp on the kids as they are always in a warm corner of the pen. Goatkids can stand quite low temperatures, but not drafts nor damp/wet.

I would be tempted to give the girl kid a shot of Betamox.

Hope your little ones are improving.  Its such a worry, but its amazing how fast they can turn a corner, and be much better.

First kid to go ill seems lots better today, her temperature has gone back to normal and she is up and bouncing about.the other one is still vey bouncy although she has a bit of a temperature so both have had a dose of antibiotic. Feeling a long more optimistic today, it is such a worry when they are ill  :unwell:

.....and just when you thought you'd got past that stage with your own offspring, and your offspring's offspring  :D  hope it all continues to improve Anne, if only to stop you running in and out of the house every half any hour in this freezing cold.

If possible, don't use a heat lamp on heathy kids, rather have a sturdy box turned on its side to make a "cave" for the kiddies, out of any drafts. I have not had a lamp on any of my kids and last spring one of my lot were born in a snow storm.... (they were in the shed obviously, but my "ventilation" system means that snow often drifts in from under the roof vents...

Hopefully they will both be ok... :fc:

That sounds promising!!  This weather is a nightmare for our animals, all this wet weather, and damp all the time.  Frost and bright cold mornings are much better for them.  Plenty of food and they can cope with the cold.
