Southdown Ram Hire
« on: January 31, 2013, 11:01:59 am »
Now taking bookings for the hire of one of our pedigree, registered Southdown rams.  We run a closed flock, apart from new ram bloodlines. We select stock for robust health, sound feet, teeth and udder, good mothering ability and milk production, lamb vigour, long life and production of twins.  If crossed onto other breeds the Southdown produces a good carcase without the lambing difficulties of some Continental breeds.

All stock is vaccinated against clostridial diseases, wormed as necessary following SCOPS guidelines, treated with Clik when appropriate, and footrot was eliminated from the flock when we vaccinated with Footvax in 2007.  The rams available this year will be shearlings. We do not give rams any additional feed so they won't fade away when put out on the hill.   We normally hire out at a charge of £50 for 3 weeks and £10 per additional week.  We leave the rams in for only 21 days with our own flock and have had only one barrener in the last three years.  Rams can be collected from NE Herefordshire from September.  All rams are hired out only once in a tupping season and are quarantined for six weeks on a neighbouring smallholding when they're returned to the farm.

Please PM me if you would like further details.
