Introduce legislation to reduce the incidence of dog theft

Responsible department: Home Office

Dog theft is common. All kinds of dogs are stolen from owners and when the owners go to the police they are told ‘There is nothing we can do, it’s just a dog’ We are all aware that the police are under pressure with budget cuts, but we need to make sure that they are willing and able to prioritize a stolen dog over a stolen bike or phone.
At present stealing a dog is the perfect crime, the police won’t pursue them and if they get caught, the penalty is minimal, yet there is a massive reward either in selling the dog, claiming reward money or using the dog as bait for dog fighting .
We, as tax payers, have the right to protection from thieves as do our dogs. We would respectfully request that the police be given a remit to give higher priority to stolen dogs and that when dog thieves are caught, they face higher penalties in court, fines set to reflect the theft and even lengthy jail sentences when it is appropriate

There have been a couple of leads in Yorkshire on Dawn's GSP, she is checking them out now. Will let you all know when Angel gets home.

Done.

It's not just dogs, though. I know it's difficult to prove anything about "stolen" cats (they tend to decide themselves who they want to live with...). How do the police act when other companion animals get stolen, i.e horses, donkeys etc?

I cannot believe what I just read!!
A dog corresponding to Angel's description was handed in to a Police station on N Y Eve.  In the morning the same person went back and took her away saying he'd made a mistake and that it was a neighbour's dog.

All the Police can say is that it was the same person - they took no details at either time!  So if it was Angel we are hoping they have realised which dog she is and taken her to some other establishment to try to claim the £3000 reward that we have all contributed to.

No paperwork done, no names, no pack drill, no evidence - unbelievable!  Useless twats!

I'm sure they have CCTV images.

To be fair, on New Year's Eve, they may have had more important things on their minds than dogs.

CCTV perhaps, we are following that up.  More important than dogs?  What is? Drunks? Stabbings?  Not in my opinion.

done it.  I couldn't believe what the police did either!!

One idea thats floating around my head is that there are many reports of near misses - ie "man in white van tries to grab dog and is thwarted by dog owner in Townsville" etc..  Those incidents will be definitely ignored by the police.  I wonder if a site like doglost would be willing to set up a page to log these incidents? Especially if reg nos are noted.  Some sort of pattern may then emerge?  What do you think?
