I sold 6 for meat yesterday and have 3 for breeding to go soon.   I would make more money rearing them myself for meat but I'm happy for some to go as it will be easier all round.

his gem of any use to some of you growers .
Just been reading elsewhere that 2013 could see a massive pork shortage because the world and the EEC's commercial pig farmers in particular cannot afford the ever increasing feed bills due to millions of tonnes of feed crops being lost due to bad weather around the world .  Most of the big boys in Europe mainland have reduced ther herds dramatically according to the british pig farming press.of 28 Nov 2012 .

that was reported but the thing they failed to report or foresee was the big number of pigs going to slaughter as these farmers here and in the eu ceased to breed and wit no imediate buyers pork has been stock piled in freezers while they could buy in cheap pigs. this came straight from the mouth of a very large pig dealer (he sends 2,000 off a week) already his  sales are falling as a knock on effect from all the excess pigs being culled, so it could be a bit longer before the price of pigs reflect the cost of keeping them.
we can still learn if we are willing to listen.

We are still buying weaners but are having trouble finding them!! Were in lincolnshire and the last 7 we bought were from Adam Henson in the cotswolds so that was around a 3 hour trip there and 3 hours back... Lincolnshire seems to not have any or were not looking in the right places!!

I reckon that there may well be a pork shortage mid 2013. As Plantoid says some EEC countries are paying people NOT to produce pork; and on a smaller scale producers struggle with weather and feed costs.  At the moment pork is so cheap in French supermarkets that it is not worhwhile producing it. BUT - you try buying weaners. A few UK people have hung in there and are selling ( on UK forums) cheap weaners. If you can find a french prodced weaner then they seem to be twice the price of those the Brits are trying to shift them for.

You're not looking in the right place  ::)  Depends on the breed you want but with GOS/saddleback/tamworth i can put you in touch with several breeders within an hour or two of you.
The best place to check is at the breed society's website or the http://www.britishpigs.org.uk/breedlist.htm  you can find the breed representatives contact details here just click on the breed you want and they can point you in the direction of your nearest breeder.

Are the pigs included in the livestock market on a Tuesday at Melton?

Yes they are  sold in the sheep shed on the left hand side behind the main office.

There is a pig sale normally every other week but because of new years the pig sales are last Tuesday next Tuesday miss a week and the last Tuesday of January.

Also Newark market had weaners in not pedigree registered but pigs that looked like GOS and 2 pens of OSB
